A revolution on dry land

The development of a new massive land-based salmon farming industry.

More than 150 different companies are involved in the financing and construction of land-based salmon farming facilities. Together, these aim for a total production of almost 3.5 million tonnes of salmon annually, which is more than this year’s world production, in sea cages, of 2.7 million tonnes.

No media house follows developments in land-based salmon farms more closely than iLaks. No industry news service reaches more relevant readers in this particular sector.

The major commercial breakthrough for land-based salmon farming remains to be seen. This has been shown, among other things, by the challenges of the fallen giant Atlantic Sapphire. But something is up. In 2024, great expectations are attached to Salmon Evolution’s flow-through facility, and to Nordic Aqua Partner’s RAS-based facility in China.

Put simply, this boils down to technology and capital. The technology must be robust and the investors must have confidence that they will get their money back, with a reasonable return.

In this industry report, we will take a closer look at how the capital markets view the future of land-based farming with the nine framework conditions, as well as how the supplier industry views the opportunities ahead. In addition to this, the report presents 150 different projects involved in this emerging business.
